Today I felt much better in the saddle. I am taking tomorrow off the bike because of the race Sunday morning. I'm glad it is just a training crit. I am looking forward to it. Too bad Angela can't come. :(

Back In the Saddle

Just a half hour around my side of Auburn. No serious efforts or overwhelming bursts. Still trying to decide on repositioning my cleats. I'll decide after one more ride. My legs feel great, but I was very out of breath very quickly today so the illness is still on the way out. I hope I am much better by the crit on Sunday.

(un)Recovery Ride

This was my first ride since getting sick. The ride on the rollers the other night never happened. I just could not do it. Nor should I have. The ride tonight felt very good while it was happening. Obviously there was some feeling I was not in top form. But with that considered, it felt like a very good albeit low impact ride. It all seemed to be going fine. That is until I got home. After I got all my gear (and layers) off, an uncontrollable coughing again ensued. It is very obvious my lungs are not recovered yet. I felt good on the bike, but it was tough.

I was told by another rider online today that the latest issue of ROAD magazine has an article in it about riding after illness and his advice to me was to stay off the bike because I could actually be making my recovery take a long, long time. I don't know if I can heed that advice, but I sure plan to.

Kits

NorCal IC3 team finally finished the team kit order for 2010 season. I just have to wait until February to get it now. We got a great team discount on those and on our headgear.

The Specialized helmets are already here and I love mine. One thing though, when you have such a well ventilated piece of headgear, remember to wear your beanie for winter riding because the difference in airflow is very obvious and you will need it. We get a great deal on Specialized bikes, too. I just don't have the budget for that right now. Maybe next season.

Sick Days

Being so sick I shivered, sweat, and coughed all through the night for three full days is not how I expected to spend my Christmas week. I felt a little funny on Friday, but just sort of blew it off. It was one of those feelings where you have a cough and it just feels like one of "those" coughs that give an ominous indication that soon you will be feeling very badly. I pushed through that day though. I had some sniffles but nothing I could not manage.

I decided to ride anyway that day, and the next, and the next. I was smart enough to layer well. I never got cold or anything but did notice my performance was not great (which I just credited to me not being very fast).

Sunday night I could tell I was not well but got up Monday morning and went in to work like always. Shortly after getting there though, I knew I should not be there being as sick as I knew I must be. So, I left early trusting my crew to finish the job of feeding everyone. I was told that night that one of my two employees was very ill with some kind of serious problem and had been taken off work by her doctor. This meant that I would have to work because no one else knows how to do anything there. I woke up Tuesday morning with a fever, stomach and body aches and making calls to Ralph and Eoch on the big white telephone in the bathroom. My wife absolutely forbid me to work reminding me how sick people could get if I cooked for them. She then would not take no for an answer as she decided whether I agreed or not that I was going to take her to the kitchen, show her what needed to be done, leave instructions for what needed to be done for her to pass on to the others there when they arrived and then go home where I belong. People from the office came down and helped and they were able to get everyone fed just the way I would have. I am so thankful to my wife for stepping up to the plate on that. She is a true blessing. Those at the office also called me and got instructions for what to prepare and how for today as well, telling me to stay home today and get well. They also only called once this morning with a couple of questions.

Last night was probably the worst yet. I was shivering, sweating, aching, hot, and cold all at the same time. I had terrible violent dreams that made me jolt awake in fear. I never have those. My wife is doting on me and being such a blessing to me.

I hope to get on the rollers later. I don't know if I am supposed to, but surely it will help my body to get some motion going on. As long as I don't overdo it.
